The section is dedicated to the advancement of the study of Latino, Latin American, and Caribbean folklore, and is committed to raising awareness of issues related to cultural expression that Latinos, Latin Americans, and Caribbeans are facing now and have faced in the past. In both scholarly and public sector arenas, within the AFS and beyond, we strive to bring the conceptual tools of folklore study to bear on these issues.

Together with the AFS Chicano and Chicana Section, we meet annually at the AFS annual meeting to plan panel discussions, paper sessions, forums, and a social outing. At that meeting we usually decide on a list of candidates for our semi-annual Compañero de las Américas Award, given to a person who has made significant contributions to the understanding of Latino, Latin American, or Caribbean folklore, and whose contributions fall within the context of the AFS annual meeting theme or venue. Past recipients include Américo Paredes, Daniel Crowley, Roger Abrahams, Genoveva Castellanoz, and Maria Herrera-Sobek.
