The Minneapolis meeting offers a wealth of opportunities for music, thanks to some AFS sections and generous support from the Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies and from the Minnesota State Arts Board through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts:

  • The Opening Ceremony will feature the RedBone Singers, a Twin Cities’ group from the Ojibwe, Lakota and Ho-Chunk Nations, who will perform songs they connect to the meeting theme of “Community: Resistance, Reclamation and Re-Creation,” Wednesday, 5:00 pm, Ballroom 1/2, thanks to support from the Minnesota State Arts Board.
  • On Friday, 5:15-7:15 pm, Finn Hall, a local band, will recreate the feel and music of historic Finnish-American dance halls for the Nordic-Baltic Section Reception in the Atrium. Everyone is invited to this event sponsored by the Nordic-Baltic Section and the Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies.
  • The Closing Reception will feature Dan Newton’s Café Accordion Orchestra, playing French musette as well as a music for a wide range of dance styles, from tangos to polkas, Saturday, 7:00 pm, Atrium, thanks to support from the Minnesota State Arts Board.
  • Vocal and instrumental jam sessions are an annual, nightly event sponsored by the Music and Song Section.
  • In addition to those jam sessions, the Fellows and Music and Song Section have organized “Words and Music in Memory of Alan Jabbour,” Thursday, 9:00 pm, Elk Lake. (Note: the Mediterranean Studies Section’s “Folk Songs of Resistance and Remembrance,” originally scheduled for Friday night, has been cancelled.)
  • The Dance and Movement Analysis Section will offer two workshops to practice some moves for the closing dance: a Swing Dance workshop Thursday, 9:00 pm, and a Latin Dance workshop, Friday, 9:00 pm, both in Windows.
