Indiana University Folklore Sites and Resources Tour

Wednesday, October 12, 8:45 AM--3:30 PM

Cost: free (lunch on your own)

Indiana University has a long history of folklore and ethnomusicological studies. We invite you to join us for a pre-meeting tour that will introduce you to some of the unique facilities available to these fields on campus. Alumni may remember these places from their time in Bloomington, and we hope that members unfamiliar with the campus will discover new resources and possibilities for future collaboration.

Each facility on the tour is putting together an exhibit and/or presentation to coincide with the conference and its theme of "Peace, War, Folklore.” The tour is free (except for lunch) and you may register for all of the sites or only those of your choosing. Spaces are limited, and you must preregister for each location, so please act quickly.

If you register for the entire tour, please plan to meet in the hotel lobby of the Indiana Memorial Union by 8:45 am. A guide will escort you to the Mathers Museum for a presentation beginning at 9:00 am. Guides will then escort the group from one location to the next for the rest of the day. If you register for only one site on the tour, please meet in the hotel lobby of the Indiana Memorial Union 15 minutes before your tour site presentation is scheduled to begin. A guide will escort you from the IMU to the tour site.

Hoosier Limestone Tour

Wednesday October 12, 9:30 AM--3:30 PM

Cost: $45 (does not include lunch, includes gratuity for drivers)

Note: Portions of this tour will require extensive walking.

Indiana is the source for the best limestone in the country. Limestone from Bloomington and the surrounding area has been used in such famous buildings as the Empire State Building, the Pentagon, and the Washington National Cathedral. This tour will take you on a fun-filled ride to explore the production and use of limestone around Bloomington.

In the morning we will leave from the doors of the Indiana Memorial Union (built with Indiana limestone) and the Marriott Courtyard to see local quarries, buildings, sculptures, and possibly a limestone carver’s studio.

After a break for lunch at a local eatery, we will tour various cemeteries around Bloomington to look at tombstones made from limestone. This portion of the tour will include extensive walking, so please wear comfortable shoes and come dressed for the weather!
