Memorials

The American Folklore Society facilitates several ways to pay tribute to our colleagues who have died.

In Memoriam in the AFS Review includes memorials of departed folklorists written by friends and colleagues. These memorials are published as they become available, and any site member can "reply" with additional memories. Contact AmericanFolkloreSociety@gmail.com if you would like to submit a memorial.

AFS also provides a Memorial Board and Table at its Annual Meeting inspired by the many folk traditions that commemorate the dead during the month of October. We encourage you to bring photographs of the deceased, printed obituaries, flowers, battery-powered votive candles and other mementos in honor of folklorists who have died and display them on the Memorial Board and Table for the duration of the meeting. AFS will provide a draped table and poster board, pushpins, and slips of paper for sharing remembrances for those who would like to make use of these items. The Memorial Board and Table is customarily located in the lobby, not far from the registration desk, Thursday through Saturday. Memorials here are not limited only to those who have died within the last year, but can include beloved mentors, friends and ancestors in our profession who are no longer with us and whom you wish to honor. Please remember that food and live candles will not be permitted.

The Annual Meeting is also the occasion for a Time of Remembrance, a reading of prepared memorials of those who have died in the past year. In 2017, a Time of Remembrance will take place immediately after the AFS Business Meeting on Saturday. Only statements that are submitted by October 1 will be read at the Time of Remembrance. Contact AmericanFolkloreSociety@gmail.com for more information about these arrangements.

These tributes are a beloved part of the annual meeting that require your participation and support. We hope the Time of Remembrance and the Memorial Board and Table will continue to grow organically, fueled by our memories and imagination, so we can remember and honor our beloved colleagues in community.
